Waco ISD Superintendent A. Marcus Nelson was pulled over on US 190 south of Hearne Wednesday night and arrested for possession of marijuana. According to jail records, he was taken into custody by a DPS trooper in Robertson County and charged with a misdemeanor.

News 10 reports this all happened around 11 p.m. Wednesday. Nelson spent the night in jail and was released 12 hours later on his own recognizance.

DPS says Nelson was driving in the left lane and not passing. The trooper who pulled him over could reportedly smell marijuana in the vehicle.

Nelson did not go to work on Thursday and took a personal day on Friday. The arrest has since been confirmed by the Waco School Board President Pat Atkins, News 10 reports.

With spring break right around the corner, a special meeting will be held so that Dr. Nelson can speak directly to the board about the matter. Nelson has been serving as superintendent since 2017.
