An Apparent Suicide and the Discovery of Arms and Explosives Have Prompted A Campus Shutdown at the University of Central Florida
Police are investigating an apparent suicide and the discovery of firearms and improvised explosives in a residence hall at the University of Central Florida.
According to a university spokesperson, a fire alarm sounded in Tower 1 residency hall around 12:20 AM Monday. Shortly afterward, police received a 911 call reporting a gunman in the building.
When police arrived, they found a man dead of an apparent suicide. They also found a handgun, an assault rifle and improvised explosives.
At this time, it is not clear if the male was a student of the university.
Tower 1 has been evacuated and its adjacent parking garage closed. University of Central Florida police and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office are investigating, and a bomb squad is on the scene.
Classes have been canceled and the campus closed as the investigation continues.
