The boyfriend of a missing Texas college student was arrested Saturday morning after remains were found in a shallow grave near the area where she was last seen four months ago.

22-year-old Sul Ross State University student Zuzu Renee Verk was last heard from in the early morning hours of October 12, 2016, near Alpine. Verk reportedly left her home on the night of October 11 for a date with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Robert Fabian. She was reported missing after she was absent from work and school the next day.

The Dallas Morning News reports that a border agent servicing equipment in Sunny Glen, a suburb northwest of Alpine, found human remains Friday morning and reported the discovery to the Brewster County Sheriff's Office.

Alpine police arrested Fabian around 9 AM Saturday and charged him with fabricating physical evidence by concealing a corpse, according to WFAA.

Meanwhile, the remains have been sent to the University of North Texas for identification, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson told KOSA-TV that the remains were scattered around the area, and that the shallow grave was well hidden. The area has been searched before, he said, and the agent who found the grave was lucky to have stumbled across it.

The Texas Rangers and federal investigators helped search for Verk late last year, asking area ranchers to comb their property for signs of the young woman. A reward of $200,000 had been offered for information leading to her whereabouts.
