Closed! Officials Close Popular Swimming Beaches at Belton & Stillhouse Hollow

The drought continues in Central Texas and forcing officials to close the popular swimming beaches at both Belton and Stillhouse Hollow Lakes.

Beaches Closed

Our news partners at KWTX report that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineering in both Belton and Stillhouse Hollow Lakes have decided to close the designated swimming beaches because of low water levels.

Keep in mind that just because the designated swimming areas are closed, it doesn't mean that you can't swim in the lakes. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Fort Worth District issued a statement saying,

“The public is still allowed to swim in the lake, but we urge you exercise extreme caution to underwater obstacles, be aware of your surroundings and as always please wear your life jacket whenever you are in or near the water.”

You'll just need to take more precautions.

Which Beaches are Closed?

The beaches that are closed to swimming are, Cedar Ridge Park, Westcliff Park, Temple Lake Park, Stillhouse Park, Dana Peak Park and Union Grove Park.

According to the press release, The U.S. Army Corps of Engineering also issued a warning to those looking to hit the lakes for some boating saying you should use extreme caution while on the water. "Boaters should also use extreme caution while on the water as areas that are usually safe to maneuver may now have unknown obstacles due to the low water levels."

The current closures are in place till further notice. Until we get some rain in Central Texas, we may need to find other ways to cool down.

Other Options

Both Killeen, Temple and surrounding areas have splash pads available for free and community pools for those able to afford a couple of dollars for entry.
