Duh, Texas Lands 4 in Top 10 Dumbest Cities Report
I'm pretty sure it was Patrick Starfish that once said, "Can we say that shoes from Texas are Dumb?"
I guess it just depends on what city in Texas those "shoes" come from.
2022’s Most & Least Educated Cities in America
The results are in and it's not a very good look for our great state. Four of the least educated cities in the country are here in Texas.
Here's the map. Click to see where your city ranks if you think your heart can take it.
WalletHub looked at the top 150 metros in the U.S. and based their finding on 11 metrics including the number of adults with certain degrees, the quality of public schools, university enrollment, and even summer learning opportunities.
First, The Good News
Texas did have one metro area place in the top 10, with Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown, TX placing at #10.
Now, The Not So Good News
The next Texas entry doesn't place 'til #73 on the list, with Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington taking that slot.
When looking at the bottom 10 of 150 cities, you'll see four Texas locations on the list.
Here're the bottom 10:
10. Corpus Christi, Texas
9. Ocala, Florida
8. Beaumont/Port Arthur, Texas
7. Stockton, California
6. Hickory/Lenoir/Morganton, North Carolina
5. Modesto, California
4. Bakersfield, California
3. McAllen/Edinburg/Mission, Texas
2. Brownsville/Harlingen, Texas
1. Visalia, California
Hmmm
Four Texas cities in the bottom 10 says a lot about the Texas education system. That, or it points out some flaws in the methodology used to rank these cities.
If it makes you feel better, California also had four cities at the bottom of the list, and Florida and North Carolina both checked in with one a piece.
The top cities in the U.S. were Ann Arbor, MI at 1, San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA at 2, Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV at 3, Madison, WI at 4 and San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley, CA at 5.
Texas Is Doing Something Right
As a whole, Texas ranks 32 out of all 50 states according to World Population Review for Best States For Education 2022. So not a terrible ranking overall.
Texas is a big state in which people with advanced degrees tend to live in or around major metros. It's also a place where those of us without a master's in rocket surgery can find ample opportunity.
Given all the growth our state's experienced in recent years, we must be doing something smart.
