A 47-year-old Temple woman was killed Friday night when the driver of a truck she was riding in drove into a hole at a construction zone alongside I35.

The accident occurred shortly before 2 AM just north a U-turn at the intersection of Avenue H and South General Bruce below the I35 overpass.

The driver told emergency responders that he'd driven into a parking lot and approached a set of railroad tracks about 6 feet lower than the parking lot. He obeyed a STOP sign, the pulled forward and drove into the 6-foot drop onto the tracks.

The impact fatally wounded the female passenger, who was declared dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Barfield. Her name has not been released pending notification of her family.

The Temple Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit is conducting a follow-up investigation into the collision, Public Information Officer Shawana Neely said Saturday morning.
