SPRING, Texas (AP) — A man who had been placed in handcuffs by Houston-area sheriff's deputies was able to pull a handgun from his pants and shoot a deputy, critically injure another person and trigger a standoff before later being found dead.

Deputies investigating a deadly-conduct incident Wednesday went to a home near Spring later in the day to arrest a suspect in the case.

Harris County sheriff's spokesman Thomas Gilliland says the unidentified man was in handcuffs when he pulled the gun and shot the deputy in the arm. He also shot another man in the home multiple times.

Deputies returned fire and shot the suspect before apparently retreating from the home.

The suspect was found dead early Thursday morning.

The second man was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The wounded deputy is expected to recover.
