Killeen ISD Says City May Need A 5th High School

It's a busy year for Killeen ISD. In August, they'll be opening a new elementary and middle school. So when the school board members met this week to discuss what's ahead, the group's thoughts turned to the need for a 5th high school in the city of Killeen.

On the table right now is the idea of taking the KISD Career Center and converting it into a high school. KISD board member Corbett Lawler told the Killeen Daily Herald, "We need to consider what we want the career center to be when the 5th high school is opened because we know the need for one is coming".

Older facilities and growing populations mean KISD needs to find solutions fast to serve the community. Some estimates say that building a new school from scratch could cost as much as $100 Million. 3 of the 4 KISD schools are beyond their intended capacity.

Killeen ISD did not make any decisions during last Tuesday's meeting. They will gather again February 21st for more discussion.
