The recent arrest of a Lamar, Texas elementary school teacher is a tragic reminder of why we must talk to our children and teach them to trust us enough to tell us everything that's going on at school.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Troi Moore, who taught kindergarten at Tamarron Elementary School in  Lamar Consolidated ISD, was arrested Tuesday, October 12 and charged with second-degree felony indecency with a child/sexual contact. Moore had been with the district since August of 2020. He was reportedly recommended by another district and had passed a criminal background check.

KPRC-TV reports that the district was made aware of the allegations against Moore on Monday, October 11, and he was suspended that day.

It's bad enough that we have the added stress of the ongoing pandemic while our kids are in school. To see a story of the trust between parents, students, and a teacher violated in such a disturbing way is heartbreaking.

It's also a reminder that during the school year, our kids often spend more time every week with their teachers than they do with us, their parents. That's why it's so important to talk to your kids about the sort of touching and attention that's not right, and let them know that they don't have to be afraid to tell you if they think it's happening to them or to another student.

We supply them with masks, hand sanitizer, and whatever other medications or supplies they need to stay safe on campus, but we can't forget to supply them with the knowledge they need to protect themselves and others in situations we'd rather not think about.
