KWTX reported that a local officer is recovering Wednesday from a kick to the face by someone they were attempting to help.

The officer was Sgt. Amanda Leka of the Lacy Lakeview Police Department. Slightly before 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Leka was called out to help East Texas Medical Center EMT's who were responding to a man have some psychiatric issues.

Lacy Lakeview police officials said in a Facebook post that the man tested positive for opioids and amphetamines in his system. The man was very combative, a danger to himself, and to others as well.

Leka, along with three other officers helped subdue the man, and bring him into custody. As Leka and the other officers were securing the man in the emergency room, things took a turn for the worst. The Facebook post said, the man “purposefully and forcefully kicked Sergeant Leka squarely in her face causing severe pain and bleeding.”

Leka is a mother and a wife, and was treated right away for the injuries she sustained from the man right there at the hospital. The police officials said, Leka has a lot of pain, bruising and discoloration, but will hopefully make a full recovery and return to duty on the job she loves.
