Copperas Cove animal control officers issued an alert Thursday after a raccoon was found lying in a yard and later tested positive for rabies.

KWTX reports that the raccoon was discovered in the 1900 block of Wayne Street. The Texas Department of Health on Thursday confirmed that the animal did have rabies.

Copperas Cove Animal Control officials are urging anyone who thinks their pets or themselves may have had contact with the rabid raccoon to call them at (254) 547-5584, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday. If assistance is needed after hours or on the weekend, call the Copperas Cove Police Department at (254) 547-8222.

If you believe you may have had contact with the raccoon or any rabid animal, make sure to contact your primary care physician immediately.
