Who doesn't like something for free, free t-shirts, free refills, free tacos, I've even seen people line up for a free bumper sticker. FREE! It's my (second) favorite four letter word.

We love free things!

Free Museum Day had to take a year off due to the COVID pandemic but it's back in 2021 and set for Saturday, September 18 with more than 1,000 museums, zoos and cultural centers across the country welcoming visitors in for free as part of the 17th Museum Day.

This years theme is "Experience America." A fitting theme indeed after a year of basically no travel.

Chief revenue officer at Smithsonian Media, Amy Wilkins, tells USA TODAY, “Museum Day represents a national commitment to access, equity and inclusion and after a rough year and a half, we’re excited for museums to open their doors and offer these educational and cultural experiences to the public for free this Museum Day.”

Museums make for a great day out. Kids and adults alike can get a look into the past and explore the history of the town you live in, or the heritage of the area you're from. See things that you may only have heard about, museums can help you open your mind and explore your own imagination.

You will need a ticket for Free Museum Day and they'll be available to download starting August 18 from Smithsonian Magazine. Only one ticket will be available per email address but each ticket is good for two people.

At the time of this writing there are seven museums in Texas participating in Free Museum Day including the Temple Railroad & Heritage Museum. There's also the Neill-Cochran House Museum in Austin, River Legacy Living Science Center in Arlington, San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site in San Felipe, Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures and Education Center in Corpus Christi, The Grace Museum in Abilene and The Museum of Southern History in Houston.

Free Museum Day is still a ways off so you have plenty of time to get it on your schedule but keep in mind, you'll need a ticket and they are available starting August 18.
