Texas Lands at #2 for Best States for Summer Road Trips

Summer is in full swing and lots of folks are planning to do some traveling. Some will fly away to vacation destinations, while others will load up the family sportster and hit the road. Wallethub just announced its Best & Worst States for Summer Road Trips, and good news - Texas landed at #2 on the list in the "Best" category.

Texas is a huge state. In fact, it's the second largest state in both land mass (after Alaska) and population (after California). As a kid, I remember driving through Texas and feeling like it would take all day to get from one side to the other. That was back when the speed limit was 55 MPH and it would take all day just to drive from one end of town to the the other.

According to Wallethub, two thirds of American are planning a vacation this summer, with 59% of those families planning on driving instead of flying. Driving is definitely my preferred form of travel. Yes, flying is quicker and more convenient, but driving gives you to opportunity to see more things. To me, that's what makes a vacation worth it - the drive to and from our destination and the stops along the way.

Wallethub looked at several key factors while compiling their list: Cost, Safety, and Activities. Texas only landed in the top 5 of one key category, gas prices, where it landed at #3 behind Louisiana and Mississippi. Overall, Texas finished 34th in the "Safety" category and 4th in the "Activities" category.

The numbers don't lie, so finishing second overall is pretty good.

Who came in at #1? Believe it or not, it was New York. We were surprised too. Really? New York? Who associates New York with road trips? WalletHub may want to check their math.
