A recent study by Hero Sports ranked the best college football teams by state, regardless of what division they were in and Texas' best team is right here in our own backyard.

Believe it or not, Texas' best college football team wasn't Texas, Texas A&M, Houston, Texas Christian or even Southern Methodist University. It was University of Mary Hardin-Baylor right here in Belton, Texas.

The criteria for ranking was straightforward across the map. Their scoring system was relative to the success within each team's respective division - that way every football team got an equal shot to claim their state's title. Below you'll find the point system used to pinpoint each state's best school in football.

  • Winning Percentage (since 2010) x 10
  • Each Conference Championship (Since 2000): 0.5 points
  • National Championships (Since 1960): 1 point
  • MVP Awards (Heisman/Payton/Hill/Gagliardi): 1 point
  • AFCA Coach of the Year Awards: 1 point

UMHB has more wins than any other Lone Star State team since the turn of the century. The Crusaders have the best winning percentage in the state by far and have only lost one regular season game in the past five years.

Rocking a .911 overall winning percentage since 2010, the Cru are 27-14 in the Division III playoffs. Yes, they've only had one appearance in the Stagg Bowl where they lost to Linfield in 2004, but they competed in every single postseason since that year to go along with four Final Four appearances in the same time span.

  • Winning Pct. since 2010: .911 (72-7)
  • National Championships since 1960: 0
  • Conference Championships since 2000: 13 (American Southwest Conference 2002-03, 2005-15)
  • Gagliardi Trophy: 0
