Belton High School students gathered at the corner of Loop 121 and Lake Road Friday to protest the suspension of assistant coach and world geography teacher Al Maxwell.
Belton ISD officials have not commented on the situation other than to tell our news partner KWTX that Maxwell has not been fired as some students and parents initially reported, but placed on administrative leave.
We reached out to Belton ISD spokeswoman Elizabeth Cox earlier this week, who told us she could not comment on any disciplinary or faculty issues.
According to students we spoke with Friday, Maxwell recently caught students smoking marijuana on school grounds. Rather than discipline or report the smokers, students say Maxwell spoke to the them, then let them go with a warning.
Again, Belton ISD officials have not commented on these allegations other than to say Maxwell has placed on administrative leave.
As of Friday, November 17, Maxwell was still listed on the Belton Tigers Athletics website.
We spoke to some of the student protesters Friday morning. You can hear what they had to say in the video above. The video is largely uncut and may contain some unsuitable language.
