Clown Threat Prompts Caution at Belton High School

Belton Police assisted Belton ISD officials in ensuring student safety Monday after an online threat generated concern.

A Twitter user with the handle "@Clown254" posted an ominous message Sunday night reading, "Belton high school better be shut down tomorrow or else". An hour later, they posted, "@BeltonISD be ready for tomorrow".

Some parents took to Facebook to express their frustration concerning the so-called "creepy clown" trend, which has recently wormed its way into Texas.

Schools in Gatesville, Waco, and Corpus Christi were all investigating similar threats late last week, though none proved substantial.

While composing this article, KTEM News learned that Killeen Police are investigating a social media threat concerning Halloween.

"[T]he Killeen Police Department has no reason to believe at this time that the threats are credible," a news release reads. "[T]hey are nonetheless disturbing and are being taken seriously."

Correction: A previous version of this article stated that Belton High had been placed on a soft lockdown Monday morning in response to the online threat.
