Our news partners at KWTX shared a story from KBTX's Michael Oder, who reported that 34-year-old Christopher Prince was hit by a Ford pickup.
Department of Public Safety investigators say Prince's black Buick sedan ran out of fuel and was left in the northbound lanes of Highway 6. As he was attempting to refuel it, he was hit by the truck.
Prince was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital in College Station, where he later passed away as a result of his injuries.
Police have not identified the driver of the Ford pickup, and say no charges have been filed.
If you run out of fuel and find yourself stranded on the road, there are things you can do to protect yourself and make yourself more visible. If possible, you should turn on your hazard lights so that other motorists can see there is a vehicle in distress and take appropriate action. If you have any lights or reflective material you can place near you or on your body, that's a good idea too. Make yourself visible! Also watch for traffic and try to avoid standing on the side of your car that other vehicles are passing.
If you're driving and spot a motorist in distress, slow down and watch for the driver or any passengers. If you can safely switch lanes, you should do so in order to give the stranded motorist room and reduce the odds of hitting them. If you stop to assist the driver. be very cautious and do not enter their vehicle. It's great to want to help, but don't endanger yourself. You should also pull a safe distance from the road and turn on your hazard lights.
Stay safe out there, folks.
