A family of six in Temple was left without a home Saturday after improperly discarded cigarettes lit a mattress on fire in their apartment.

Temple Fire & Rescue was dispatched to Canyon Creek Town Homes, 1476 Canyon Creek Drive, at 9:38 PM. The first unite to arrive saw smoke coming from the front door of a two-story apartment and a person lying on the ground in the parking lot.

Inside the apartment, crews located the fire in a second-story bedroom. They extinguished the flames, then pulled apart a segment of the ceiling to make sure flames hadn’t reached the attic. They also confirmed that the fire hadn’t spread to other units.

One adult was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hospital and a teenager was taken to McLane’s Children’s Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

A dog was rescued from the home and reunited with the family, who are staying with relatives.

Fire investigators determined that discarded cigarettes caused the fire, and that found that all but one of the fire alarms in the home had been disabled, including the one in the bedroom.

Firefighters want to remind people that flames can spread quickly in a home and that smoke alarms should be kept active and tested often in order to save lives in the case of a fire.
