Dozens Gather to Remember Slain DPS Trooper Damon Allen

Texas State Trooper Damon Allen was fatally shot during a traffic stop in Freestone County on Thanksgiving day. Sunday night, a public service was held outside the sheriff's office in Freestone County, and dozens of people attended to honor the service of the slain officer.

KXXV-TV shared video of the service and spoke to people who attended.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Allen, 41, was a 15-year veteran of the Texas DPS, a husband, and a father of three. On Thursday, November 23, Allen stopped a vehicle driven by Dabrett Black, 32, on Interstate 45 near Fairfield around 4 PM. Police say dashcam footage shows Black shooting Allen as the trooper was walking back to his patrol car.

After a 5-hour-long manhunt, Black was eventually captured in Waller County.

Black has been charged with capital murder of a peace officer. He also faces charges related to assaulting a public servant, insufficient bond, and evading arrest.

The Corsicana Daily Sun reports that Black, a resident of Lindale, TX, had run-ins with police before Thursday's shooting. In 2015, he was charged with assault on a public servant and attempting to take a weapon from an officer in Smith County. Earlier in 2017, he was accused of aggravated assault against a public servant, resisting arrest, and reckless driving.
