Killeen Independent School District officially opened its enrollment center Monday, allowing parents to sign up students in prekindergarten through 12th grade who are new to the district.

Parents are asked to bring immunization records, proof of residency, and birth certificates to the center, which is open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through August 8.

Several thousand enrollments are expected. 3,070 new students were enrolled for the 2011-2012 school year, and 3,773 for the 2012-2013 year.

The large number of enrollments led to long waiting times at the center, prompting several parents to leave and try again at another time.

The district is working to accommodate record numbers of students by changing attendance zones, expanding facilities, and constructing a new elementary school.
