Love LEGOs? 2nd Annual Bricks Event Coming to Killeen, Texas

LEGO lovers, put this on your calendar. The 2nd Annual Bricks event is headed to Killeen, Texas this weekend (September 17 and 18), with everything from art sculptures to mosaic LEGO floors on display. The best part? Admission is free! But you can donate a few dollars if you want to participate in a build. Scroll for details about that.

History of LEGOs

One of my favorite toys when I was growing up was a LEGO set I got for Christmas one year. I really wish I had kept it for my kids, but it got sold in a garage sale long before I became a parent.

'LEGO' is actually a contraction of two Danish words: leg (play) and godt (well), according to advertising blog site Little Black Book. The company was founded in 1932 by Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen. In 1947, LEGO released a truck said to be one of the first modular toys. You could assemble the pieces, take them apart, and assemble them over and over again. The company decided to call these bricks, 'LEGO Bricks' in 1953.

The first LEGO train set was released in 1967, consisting of an engine, truck, carriage, and a blue railway track.

Bricks Event Dates, Times, and Location

There's plenty to love at this event for kids as well as adults. The 2nd Annual Bricks event will be held during two consecutive days in September. Hours on Saturday, September 17th are 10 am to 6 pm. On Sunday, September 18th, the exhibit will be open from 10 am to 4 pm.

The Event Is Free, But...

The event is free and will be hosted at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center on 3601 South W. S. Young Drive.

However, if you want to participate in a build for a good cause, you can donate $3 to Fairy Bricks, a non-profit benefitting hospitalized children. When you do, your family will be given a 32x32 LEGO studs baseplate and a mosaic pattern to build. Your piece will then be added to a larger piece spelling out the name of this event.
