Will Ferrell to Star in Texas True Crime Movie ‘Fruitcake’
Two of my favorite actors teaming up on any project is usually enough to pique my interest, but the fact that Laura Dern and Will Ferrell are going to co-star in a true crime story out of Texas has me genuinely excited.
According to a report shared by our partners at News 10, the two will star in 'Fruitcake', which will tell the story of accountant Sandy Jenkins and his wife, Kay. Back in 2015, Sandy was sentenced to a decade behind bars for embezzling approximately $16 million from the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana. Kay was sentenced to five years of probation and community service.
UPDATE: I'm seeing some reports that Laura Dern may have dropped out of the project. I hope that's not the case. She's one of my favorite actresses and I'd watch her in a movie about paint drying. Say it ain't so!
According to an FBI press release, the Jenkins spent their ill-gotten funds on lavish trips aboard private jets, and rumor had it they even bought new luxury cars every time their current vehicles needed an oil change. The report even mentions that the two stopped shopping at a Dallas Neiman Marcus because the store ran out of things to sell them.
The Jenkins lived that rock star lifestyle from December of 2004 until they were busted in June of 2013. Sandy had served as Corporate Controller for Collins Street Bakery since 1998.
So, how did they squeeze so much money out of a humble bakery? Well, it wasn't just any bakery. Collins Street ships their famous fruit cake and other baked goods to customers around the world. Their website details their prestigious history, and also serves as a cool online time capsule. I don't recommend visiting it while at work because you will spend a good hour or more digging through all the interesting stuff and the boss won't appreciate it.
I've read that the movie is scheduled to shoot this year, and Page Six reports Will Farrell is already exploring Corsicana. If anyone out there is reading this and spots him around town, shoot us a pic, won't you?
