Lynn,

I really feel sad if your [Logic Minute] reflects the thinking of the grass-roots Republican Party. Perhaps one of the more amazing things I have witnessed as a serious observer of political trends over the last three decades is how those who describe themselves as "conservatives" have gradually placed themselves in direct opposition to the policies and philosophies of Ronald Reagan and the "revolution" led by Newt Gingrich in the House. I have remained largely aligned with those principles and in doing so find myself being accused of heresy by those who claim the right to determine what a "conservative Republican" ought to be.

Ronald Reagan recognized that the immigrants from south of our border were generally hard-working individualists who started small businesses at a much greater rate then did natural-born American citizens. He saw them as natural Republicans. His push to provide a route to citizenship for long-term undocumented residents with clean records was one of the cornerstones of a move that brought Republicanism to be the dominant political philosophy. Even President Clinton acted more like a Reagan Republican than a Roosevelt Democrat.

Your LM carefully avoids the subject of the discussion on "Face the Nation." Immigration reform is one of those critical items that we either address or we will see a further deterioration in respect for the law. I know quite a large number of conservatives who proudly identify themselves with the TEA Party. To date I have not found one who takes the time to validate the resident legality of the people who tend their lawns.

A couple of years ago I had to terminate the services provided our family by a team of lawn-tenders. I spoke with the leader and found that both he and the entire team were undocumented, e.g. illegal aliens. I now have my yard maintained by a team that charges twice as much, but all of the people who work for this sole-proprietor have legitimate residence documents or are citizens.

I have raised this issue with more than a few conservatives and they have a pretty consistent reply. "That is not my responsibility. The government should take care of it." When I point out that they are violating the very law they insist the government must enforce, they tap-dance all around the subject. If I press it they leave, and leave angry. Yes, I now pay twice as much to get my yard mowed, edged, etc., but I am doing it legally.

It is actually a very simple issue. If good, conservative Republicans would stop employing illegal aliens, they would go home. If you take a look at the owners of the companies that have been raided in the last four years as the Obama administration has deported a record-breaking number of illegal aliens, you will find that the vast majority of them are owned by conservative activists. Several meat-packing plants in the mid-west have been put out of business by the deportation raids over the past several years. If you do the research you will find that their owners were almost all very outspoken conservatives. There is a lot of irony there.

I also find it quite interesting that you apparently believe the House of Representative's positions do not reflect the will of the people of the United States. The amazing thing about that is that you and Dianne Pelosi appear to be in complete agreement on that point. When you and Representative Pelosi agree on something, it might do you well to examine your beliefs.

Oh, and by the way, my direct ancestors back in the 1700s were illegal residents. It was the Scots-Irish who were going to destroy the culture and civilization of America back then. An armed and properly deputized company of militia out of Savanna came up into the mountains to deal with the illegal residents and got their proverbial asses kicked. The Census Bureau has published reports suggesting that in about 15 years, the majority of Texans will be persons who are largely descendants of Spanish speaking people who entered the United States without permission to do so. Get used to it. Either the Republican party will embrace that reality, as did Reagan, or the GOP will go the way of the Whigs.
